About Violence and War
in the Light of Ancient Jewish History and Rabbinical Literature
For thinking in the sphere of religion one of the hardest problem to face is the problem of war and violence. It is hard in in both aspects, seeing the suffering caused by them, or addressing the question of justifying their sanctification. Jews in ancient times lived in no vacuum, they were surrounded by other people of the ancient East. This was a determining factor in formulating their ideas and convictions about war and violence. This is true, despite the fact, that they did have their own special standing points in this field.
We examine the subject in the pages of the Tanach, in the Bible, and see what were the surprise attacks”, the raids from ambush, how the priests accompanied the army to the battle field, how Jews treated war victims, and what were the conditions of peace.
The standpoints of the Prophets in the question of war and violence deserve special attention.
The Rabbinical teaching and opinions in the post Biblical early Jewish literature were the direct continuation of the preceding era.
